My wife and I went away for a week to a Health Spa. It didn't start well they messed up some things with the advanced booking, which their booking system had not got right. Anyway we got over it and went on with our week.
There was a coffee lounge and we found a cosy seat each morning to relax after Yoga and buy a healthy smoothie. We had a great view of the comings and goings of guests ordering drinks.
Over the days we noticed one young server (barista) stood out. His name is Armand, not sure of his nationality but that doesn't matter. Compared to his colleagues, he was always smiling and laughing and nothing was too much for him. He comforted his clients to take a seat and he would find them with their drink. We noticed this for a few days and we also noticed the difference amongst his colleagues, they hadn't latched on to his positive demeanor.
So one day I took our smoothie glasses back to the till and he was standing there. I reached out shook his hand and told him what a great job he was doing. He went bright red with embarrassment and kinda waived it away. He was grateful though and didn't stop smiling the rest of his shift.
I wonder how many folks noticed him, I wonder how many of them did what I did? I am not suggesting I am some super person doing this, but I just felt I had to show him respect and gratitude in the moment, instead of noticing and never saying anything. He worked really hard and I bet he gets paid very little. But my handshake may just have lifted his day, gave him the impetus to continue smiling and laughing and making sure nothing was too much for him for the rest of his working life.
I just wonder...
